Tidbinbilla Discussion Paper for a New Plan of Management

Tidbinbilla Discussion Paper for a New Plan of Management

The current Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve Plan of Management was prepared in 1999 and is now being reviewed in accordance with the requirements of the Planning and Development Act.

This discussion paper is the first step in the process of preparing a new plan of management for Tidbinbilla. Its purpose is to seek community views on the values of Tidbinbilla, the issues and options associated with their conservation and use, and the current and future management policies for the Tidbinbilla precinct.

The discussion paper recognises that significant events have occurred since the last plan of management was prepared. Disastrous fires swept through the area in 2003 destroying much of the existing infrastructure and requiring the ACT Government to review management priorities and policies and make substantial investments in rebuilding infrastructure. While some necessary decisions regarding the future direction for Tidbinbilla have been made since the fires, there are many more decisions yet to be made.

The Tidbinbilla precinct now incorporates:

  • Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
  • Birrigai, and
  • Jedbinbilla (Block 60 Paddys River which was previously pine plantation)

The administration and management of Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve and Birrigai have been amalgamated and a Board of Management has been established to advise the Department of Territory and Municipal Services and the Department of Education and Training on strategic issues, opportunities and options for the Tidbinbilla precinct.  The Board will oversee the management planning process and monitor implementation of an adopted plan of management.

The Board is very interested in community views on Tidbinbilla and encourages the community to comment on any matter related to the future management of Tidbinbilla.

The draft NPAACT paper can be seen here.

A series of public workshops will be held during February 2009 and further details here.

The discussion paper is available to download from the TAMS website Discussion Paper for a New Plan of Management for Tidbinbilla or printed copies are available from ACT Government Shopfronts, ACT Public Libraries and from the Tidbinbilla and Namadgi Visitor Centres. Printed copies of the discussion paper are also available by calling Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.

The closing date for submissions on the discussion paper is COB 26th February 2009.
