Volunteers needed to help the high country

Volunteers from the Snowy Mountains region are needed to help stop the spread of weeds in Kosciuszko National Park, one of Australia’s most fragile alpine ecosystems. A generous bequest of $60,000 by Kenneth Milburn to Landcare Australia is funding a three-year project to locate and remove threatening plant species from the walking trails, service roads and huts in the alpine areas around Mt Kosciuszko.

Now in its second year, the project needs local volunteers to get involved to help ensure its continuing success. Last year volunteers helped Greening Australia and the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to establish a workable methodology to locate and treat weed incursions.

“This project is a fantastic opportunity for people who love the high country to help maintain its fragile native plant communities” said Haydn Burgess of Greening Australia. “I am particularly interested to hear from bushwalkers living in the Snowy Mountains region who know the tracks and plants of Kosciuszko National Park as well as anyone”, he added.

Plant species on the hit list include Orange Hawkweed, Cinquefoil, Mullein, Ox-eye Daisy, St John’s Wort, Sweet Vernal Grass, Timothy Grass, Yarrow and Vipers Bugloss. In recent years these weeds have increased along some of the more popular alpine walking tracks. Most of the species have proved particularly invasive in lower altitudes, and this project is a real opportunity to help stop their spread into the fragile native plant communities of alpine areas.

Anyone interested in getting involved, or who would like further information about the project, can contact Haydn Burgess at Greening Australia on 02 6253 3035 or 0439 030 059. The next work party will be in April this year, with further work planned for early 2015.
