004 Weathering agent

004 Weathering agent - Photography by Kevin McCue

Granite weathers over time. Rainwater seeps into cracks that formed as the rock cooled, and chemically alters the rock. When the water freezes, the expanding ice may cause exfoliation. Bushfires cause rapid exfoliation leaving light fresh rock surfaces and thick piles of gravel as seen after the 2003 bushfire ravaged Namadgi National Park.
