486 Common Koel - Photography by Kevin McCue

This distant view of a male currawong-sized cuckoo, black with red eyes, is anything but common in the ACT, that is until late December 2009 when it seems to have arrived for the summer in numbers from Indonesia. Its loud call, a penetrating 'Ko - el' at most times of the day and night, has disturbed Canberra residents enough to attract comment in the local newspaper. The Red Wattlebirds don't seem particularly worried even though they are the most likely foster parent.
