Moth - Melanodes anthracitaria

Moth - Melanodes anthracitaria - Photography by Sally Hatton

This medium sized black geometrid moth has a wingspan of about 50 mm (female) and 40 mm (male). This one was seen on 24 September 2016 on a signpost in Southern Namadgi National Park ACT.
The larvae and adults have two forms, the caterpillars green or brown. The adults are slate grey with black wavy lines. One form has pale yellow bands on the wings.

Their flight period is August to January depending on location. The larvae feed on Eucalypts.
