The NPA Goanna Project has moved into a new phase. In contrast to what was done in the early years, during the next goanna season, participating volunteers will be trapping Rosenberg’s Goannas in far away places; in Western Australia, in South Australia and on Kangaroo Island. And if current plans come to fruition they will also trap Goulds Goannas in western NSW. This talk will briefly update us about the goanna season just past, and provide the reason for the changed plans.
Dr Don Fletcher, NPA member and highly experienced retired ecologist, has coordinated and led over 10,000 hours of volunteer work on the NPA Rosenberg goanna project - since its start in 2017. This project has significantly increased knowledge about Rosenberg goannas in the ACT and surrounding areas, including behaviour and habitats. Supported by Environment grant funding from the ACT government, Don has worked closely with ACT Parks to develop an understanding of this significant and increasingly threatened species in the Canberra region.
