ACT Parks
Namadgi National Park
Namadgi National Park contains a rich diversity of natural resources and is of great conservation value. The area is dominated by high mountains many crowned by massive granite outcrops and plateaux separated by small upland flats in saddles leading down heavily forested slopes to deep frost hollow valleys. A wide range of vegetation habitats are represented including:
- wet sclerophyll forest;
- sub-alpine woodland;
- montane savannah woodland;
- montane and sub-alpine heath;
- herbfields;
- sphagnum bogs and swamps;
- subalpine grasslands;
- wet forest gullies; and
- dry tussock grass.
The Park's vegetation habitats provide a range of faunal habitats for species such as the Corroboree Frog (Pseudophryne corroboree), Alpine Water Skink (Eulamprus kosciuskoi), Tan-Backed Rock Skink (Egernia species) and the Kosciusko Metallic Cockroach (Polyzosteria virridisima). A number of rare and uncommon plant and animal species including the alpine plants Grevillea diminuta, Parautennaria uniceps and Geranium obtusisepalum, the Broad Toothed Rat (Mastacomys fuscus), Feathertail Glider (Acrobates pygmaeus), Pigmy Possum (Cercartetus nanus), Yellow-Bellied Glider (Petaurus australis), Alpine Whistling Frog (Litoria verrauxi alpina), Dendys Toadlet (Pseudophryne dendyi), River Black Fish (Gadopsis mamoratus) and Macquarie Perch (Macquaria australasica) occur in some of the Park's more unusual habitats.
The Park's physical connection to important protected lands such as Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, Bimberi Nature Reserve, Scabby Nature Reserve and Kosciuszko National Park enhance the Park's natural environment. All of these, together with Namadgi National Park, Brindabella National Park and the Victoria Alpine Parks, are part of the Australian Alps National Parks.
Canberra Nature Park
Canberra Nature Park is a vital part of Canberra's urban area. Most of the parks are within walking distance from homes. Parks include Mulligans Flat, Goorooyaroo, Gungahlin Grasslands, Gungahlin Hill, Dunlop Reserve, Gossan Hill, The Pinnacle, Mt Painter, Aranda Bushland, Bruce and O'Connor Ridge, Black Mountain, Mt Majura, Mt Ainslie, Remembrance Nature Park, Mt Pleasant, Redhill, Oakley Hill, Mt Mugga Mugga, Isaacs Ridge, Mt Taylor, Cooleman Ridge, Farrer Ridge, Wanniassa Hills, Tuggeranong Hill, Rob Roy Range, McQuoids Hill and Urambi Hills.
Without Canberra Nature Park we would not have a Bush Capital.
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, first declared in 1936, is rich in natural and cultural values. The area protects 5450 hectares of important habitat for threatened and locally extinct plants and animals.
Murrumbidgee River Corridor
The Murrumbidgee River flows for nearly 70km through the ACT. The area protects an important natural corridor for plants and animals.
