Work parties continue to be a core part of NPA’s conservation work.
A recent major effort involved nine NPA volunteers, led by ACT Parks rangers, installing 1,000 tree guards and planting 40 Eucalyptus viminalis below Greenhills camp on the Murrumbidgee River Corridor, between Kambah Pool and Casuarina Sands.
The team had been expecting to remove tree guards and fences at another location, but on arriving at the ACT Parks depot they were told installing tree guards around 2,000 newly planted eucalypts and casuarinas along the riverbank was a higher priority. The volunteers used a mixture of pre-made plastic guards and ones made on the day from wire mesh.
In addition, they planted the Eucalyptus viminalis along a gully to stabilise the banks and help control erosion. This included installing ‘gully stuffers’ – 1 metre sections of Iron Bark logs – and filling some large gully holes with rocks to slow the water and create cascades.
