Goanna project on brink of breakthrough

Our goanna research project has begun again for the summer. We're back in the Naas Valley in Namadgi National Park, working with ACT Parks to identify how many Rosenberg goannas live in the valley, where they travel, their home range, and their breeding habits (we hope they'll be some young ones too).

The team recently spent a day in the Naas Valley weighing,  measuring,  microchipping, taking blood samples, and numbering several goannas before releasing them again into the wild.

‘All this information will help in the management of this important ACT species, said team leader Don Fletcher.

‘We're on the brink of two genetic breakthroughs. Rosenberg’s in the ACT and NSW appear to be genetically distinct from ones in South Australia and Western Australia,  and there even seems to be a second form of Rosenberg’s within the ACT region.’

However, we need your help to fund this international recognised citizen science project.  NPA is a volunteer organisation and registered charity, so all donations are tax deductible.

We also need volunteers to help with the trapping program. If you would like to volunteer, please get in touch.
