Our Rosenberg’s Goanna Project still has vacant slots in the trapping schedule and help is greatly needed with photo processing.
On 21 Sept, 30 cage traps were set in the lower (northern) end of the Naas Valley research site in Namadgi National Park and 30 places marked in the higher southern end of the site to move the traps to later.
One goanna was sitting where a trap was to go and became the first capture this season. Then in the two 3-day trapping sessions in the lower valley, the team had a good result, obtaining DNA samples from 25 different goannas.
Most of the goannas were new and several were from a previous visit in 2021 – 22 and Some had not seen since 2017 – 18.
Unfortunately ,the final day of the first session was marred by the death of a goanna first caught in 2020 in one of our traps. A veterinary examination suggested the cause was most likely a combination of fungal skin infection with the stress of capture and possible overheating.
