An ACT Government e-petition calling for the reopening of Ginninderra Falls, west of Belconnen, has been started by a local action group.
The falls and surrounding land are up for sale raising concerns that the sale could rob the public of access to the once popular tourist attraction.
The organisers of the petition, the Ginninderra Falls Association Committee, say they wants to see Ginninderra Falls serve not only as a local attraction, but also a haven for native wildlife.
‘It boasts rare plant species and serves as a nesting ground for endangered birds, the petition says. ‘The future of its richness and biodiversity is uncertain.’
‘Preserving the falls and ensuring public access is beneficial for promoting tourism to the ACT, supporting ecological conservation, and maintaining regional and indigenous heritage.
‘The people of Canberra and the region have been denied access to this once popular attraction for 20 years. For these compelling reasons, action is needed to save Ginninderra Falls.’
The petition requests that the ecological values of the land be protected and that a national park to be established to include Ginninderra Falls as well as the Murrumbidgee and Ginninderra gorges.
You can add your signature to the petition up to the closing date on 23 October 2025.
