NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) removed 3,530 horses from Kosciuzsko National Park between November 2021 and 31 December 2023, with 1923 of those removed in the six months to December 2023.

Since July, around 800 horses were removed from the southern block of KNP following the amendment to the Kosciuszko National Park Wild Horse Heritage Management Plan to allow aerial shooting for all feral animals. The plan has a mandatory target to reduce feral horse numbers in KNP to 3,000 by June 2027.

This year there will be a major attempt to remove large feral animals including deer and horses using a variety of methods including ground and aerial shooting. Rehoming of wild horses will continue.
