Goanna project

We urgently need your help to protect the Rosenberg’s Goanna!

This citizen science project aims to improve understanding of habitat use and movements of Rosenberg’s goanna (Varanus  rosenbergi) in Namadgi National Park and the Mt Majura – Mt Ainslie area of the ACT. This species of goanna is found only in southern Australia, however its population is threatened by habitat loss and predation and it now has vulnerable conservation status in NSW and Victoria.  Our research so far suggests that the local Rosenberg's goanna may be a sub-species. More research and study is needed to understand this unique species and support greater conservation efforts where that is needed.

Become a Goanna Guardian – donate now!

One of our largest native reptiles, the Rosenberg’s Goanna (Varanus rosenbergi), is found only in southern Australia, including several parts of the ACT where its numbers are thought to be declining.

We need your help to protect this vulnerable species – NOW!

Your tax-deductible donation will fund vital scientific studies and activities such as:

  • sequencing the genetics of Rosenberg’s Goanna
  • collecting field samples by capturing and tagging goannas
  • using sophisticated equipment, including GPS, to track goanna movements
  • buying equipment such as camera traps and specialised cameras to monitor burrows
  • recruiting volunteers and running citizen science events.
